Eye-opener with a pitch

Two cups of McDonald’s iced coffee (BUY!) sit on the Fox 5 TV news desk, a punch-you-in-the-face product placement (BUY!) to chase down your morning news.

They’ve been on the Las Vegas station set for about two weeks, following the lead of a few TV stations across the country, and they’re still looking every bit as frosty and tantalizing (BUY!) as they were the first day you laid your eyes on them.

But wait, here’s the best part: They’re not real. Fake coffee on the real news, two plastic cups permanently filled with some kind of bogus drink. The anchors aren’t even supposed to acknowledge them, McDonald’s reps explain.

Russia Scorns Methadone for Heroin Addiction

The most effective treatment for heorin addiction (well there’s also ibogaine) is demonized in Russia with the Kremlin kids shouting it in the streets. Makes you think. Why would they hate methadone treatment so much? Hmm…

The country that shares a border with one of the largest opium providers in the world is saying no to treatment while enjoying a shocking addiction rate (although it is worth noting the NYT pulls the common trick of saying “drug addicts” when discussing heroin). Russia continues to learn to swim the hard way while diving into the hedonistic pool of modern capitalism.

Sad? Lonely? Into UNIX?! Into Twitter? In that case you might be interested in this program I just wrote. Or perhaps heavy medication. It emulates the terminal messaging command “hey” that is popular on Irish Netsoc systems but communicates with Twitter instead of with other users on the system. It’s lame, it’s flaky but it works and it amused me for an hour or two.
